The
temporomandibular joint or the TMJ is a fairly complex
bone structure in the skull that facilitates opening of
the mouth to eat and drink, chomp and masticate meat and
poultry, provides nourishment for the body and even
helps us to smile and say ‘Good Morning’ the first thing
in the morning. However, it turns into a storehouse of
innumerable issues that include TMJ pain, spasm,
headache, earache and even numbness in the fingers and
arms when something goes wrong with it. Known as TMJ
disorder symptoms, the topic is being discussed in
detail below.
TMJ
disorder symptoms or simply TMJ symptoms are so numerous
that it would be better to list them under three basic
heads – Principal, Secondary and Abnormal. These
symptoms of the TMJ syndrome can be seen in the arms and
the fingers and at other body parts too. We have to take
a look at all of them because the symptoms in the
fingers often cause them to appear in other body parts
as well.
Principal
TMJ Symptoms
- Pain in
the jaw joint
- Inflammation
of the joint with tenderness felt in the surrounding
muscles, ligaments and bones.
- Unrelenting
headache and earache
- Clicking
sound with opening of the jaw
- Stiffness
around the joint
- sinus
stuffiness
- Pain all
over the face (myofascial pain
syndrome)
- Hearing
problems
Secondary
TMJ Symptoms
- Blurred
vision, poor night vision and sensitivity to light.
Pressure felt behind the eyes with frequent watering
in the eyes.
- Cluster
headache, sinus-type headache and migraine. Tenderness
in the scalp area and hair
roots.
- Tinnitus
type of ringing, hissing, roaring sounds in the ear.
Progressive loss of hearing along with feeling of
stuffiness in the ear.
- Painful
and restricted jaw movement.
- Unusual
and chaotic tongue movement associated with pain in
the mouth, cheek and chin.
- Painful
neck muscles and aching shoulder
blades.
- Back
pain with a feeling of inflexibility in the spinal
chord.
- Numbness
in the fingers and arms that is caused primarily due
to misaligned bite. This in turn causes the muscles
serving the jaws, neck, face and shoulders to go into
temporary spasm. The ensuing seizure creates mayhem
with the surrounding tissues and pinches the nerves
(brachial plexis) passing through the arms and into
the hands. This results in a feeling of numbness or
tingling sensation in the fingers and the
arms.
Unusual
Symptoms Of TMJ
- Undue
swelling in the cheek is an unusual symptom of TMJ.
This becomes more pronounced on the side of the face
that is affected by the TMJ disorder. Even though
inflammation in the jaw joint is a regular feature of
TMJ, it seldom affects the cheek or the neighboring
areas.
- Recurring
jaw dislocation not accompanied by TMJ pain or other
discomfort is yet another unusual type of TMJ symptom
rarely reported by TMJ patients. People suffering from
such abnormal occurrences go to sleep with a firm
pillow pressed against the offending joint that is
prone to get dislocated during slumber. This seemingly
results from misaligned jaws that have been left
untreated for long and requires help from
neuromuscular dentists to get the problem
solved.
- Though
the usual range of hearing clicking jaws is a foot or
two, when the sound of jaw clicking has been reported
to be heard from a distance of five feet, it surely is
a rare and unusual happening. TMJ sufferers reporting
such occurrences also feel intense pain during and
after the clicking.
- Shoulder
pain is not a regular feature of TMJ. However, there
are some who do complain of shoulder pain which is
often restricted to one side where the strained
muscles radiating from the neck spread towards the
shoulder.
While
arguing about TMJ/TMD symptoms it may be relevant to
define that similar symptoms can also lead to diseases
that are least linked to temporomandibular joint
disorder. For instance, there are more than hundred
causes (other than TMJ) that lead to facial pain. These
include dental abscess, eye disorder, glaucoma, facial
trauma, nasal disorders, etc. And so, a correct
diagnosis is always needed before the condition can be
treated.
TMJ
Treatment
On account
of the fact that so many people are now suffering from
TMJ, its treatment has now become a priority. However
sadly, there is hardly a treatment that can offer
permanent TMJ relief. Yes, there are conventional
treatments (drugs and surgery), over the counter
solutions (splints and mouthguards), home TMJ remedies
and natural exercises for TMJ… but they just provide a
temporary relief because they all concentrate on curing
the symptoms and not the root causes that is behind
them.
Holistic
remedies on the other hand do just the opposite.
Ignoring the symptoms, holistic remedies reach within
the body to treat it as a whole and identify the
contributing factors that is behind the real problem.
Once these causes are identified and treated, the
symptoms go away on its own and the problems are
resolved for good. TMJ thus does not bother the person
anymore. Holistic remedies indeed give the best results
for TMJ
problems.
